can you help me with this? PLEASE HELP?

Q. how can i dress like a 1940's or 1950's woman? i am fascinated by the styles and way of life and etiquette back then. please help me. i want help on slang, dress, etiquette, and way of life. thank you kindly.

A. The early 1940s were difficult because of wartime shortages of fabric. This explains the short, often skimpy skirts on dresses made of easily creased rayon. To compensate for the skirts, shoulders were extending with padding. Not terribly attractive really. On the plus side, though, many women went into factories, which gave them a excuse to wear slacks without being frowned upon as 'loose women'. Also, because their heads had to be covered with scarves for safety reasons, they could wear curlers during their working hours, and take them out in the evening. Remember, no hair spray or electric curling iron or mousse then, so those old metal curlers came in handy! Peep toed shoes with platform soles were trendy, if a woman could get her hands on a pair. Accessories were minimal - again because of wartime shortages and a more casual attitude toward clothing - few men to impress, during those war years. And since stockings were scarce, orangey tanning lotion was applied to bare legs, with a 'seam' down the back, drawn on with an eye-brow pencil.

In 1947, with the war over, the Christian Dior's New Look came in. This meant much longer skirts, which were considered more feminine because they had enough fabric in them to swirl around the lower calves. And with real stockings, no less! Looser hairstyles took over from the rolled pompadour of the war years.

Then came the '50s. Fashioned changed little over this entire decade. Undergarments consisted of garter belts or girdles, tightly fitted pointy bras, full or half-slips, panties that covered the entire bottom and belly, and nylon hose with seams. Shoes varied from flat 'ballerina' slippers to tapered high heels to 'fruit boots', which were pixie style flats. For casual wear there were penny loafers and saddle-shoes. Skirts were worn at mid-calf, often held at the waist with an elastic cinch belt. If a woman leant to the side, the belt would fold in half and have to be tugged back into place. Also they were so tightly fitted that the waistband of a skirt would pop out from beneath them. Sweaters and blouses were often made of nylon, the latter see-through, worn over a camisole or full slip, trimmed with lace.

Going formal meant a strapless dress with a multi-layered net skirt, worn over a crinoline petticoat. Extra glamour was achieved by adding dyed-to-match satin shoes and elbow length gloves. Hair spray came into use in the late fifties, which meant the days of having a guy 'run his fingers through your hair' were over. That spray was like glue. Hair was often streaked, but only streak per 'do', usually achieved by applying straight peroxide or a product called Light 'n Bright. Hairstyles such as the Italian Boy, Pixie Cut, Poodle Cut and Pony Tail were 'in'. (So was virginity, but we won't go there.) Hats with veils and white gloves were worn when dressed up, especially for church. And by the late fifties, hats had little fabric-covered clamp affairs on the sides, to keep them in place. Swim suits were elasticized, covered most of the torso, and had a little panel at the front to hide the 'private' area. Needless to say, no waxing was required. Short shorts usually had cuffs and were often worn with a cotton blouse, with the bottom buttons undone, so the tails could be tied to saucily reveal the midriff. Oh, and there were pedal pushers, peasant blouses, peasant skirts, and 'straight' skirts, with a slit or two or a pinch pleat at the hem for walking purposes. Clothes were, for the most part, uncomfortable. As was the way of life, really.

All this blethering and Ive not even touched on etiquette or slang. Just a bit on that then. Young persons respected their elders, whether they agreed with them or not. These were days when an adult, any adult, could keep a young person in place with a threat or a swipe. Girls, good girls that is, could keep a guy in his place too. Most girls feared having a bad reputation. It honestly mattered. As for slang, it depended on your neighborhood, and the year. Most of it can be found in songs for these eras. Well, Ive overdone it, I think. But hope Ive helped a bit.

I need some advice . .. ?
Q. I am 21 almost 22 and I have felt for a very long time that I am transsexual and I don't know what to do. I want to be a girl and love to dress in girls clothes, but yet I don't know where to get then in my size. I also love to where makeup when I'm home alone. Can anyone offer any advice?

A. Just remember to dress for your age. I feel that is the #1 key to success to dressing FEM.
How's your hair, is it long, short or are you trying to grow it out?
Pay attention to what the girls your age around you are wearing, their make-up, their hair. That usually is a good indacater to what your look should be.
Of course throw your own flair in there.Be your self.
Is there a second hand shop close to you? We have a Plato's Closet by me, they sell gently used Young Person's clothes, all brands, all sizes, all styles. Maybe if you have something like that near you , you could outfit your self for little money. Until you get more comfortable to go to the Mall to shop. Maybe Target would also be a good place to shop, allot of trendy people shop there. (I happen to LOVE Target!)
But what is your "male" size? You didn't state that in you Q, if we knew, we could help you more.As far as shirts, most run the same size, pants are different, shoes run different. Mens shoes run 2 sizes smaller than womans, so if you wear a mans 8 that would be a womans 10. So I hope that helps.
Pants run in waist size for men, in womans they run in #, so if you have a 27-29 waist that is a 7-9 in womans(brand depending) Here is what I would try, go to the mens, pick 1-2 pair of pants, then go to womans, pick 1-2 pair, and take them all to try on. That way it doesn't look like your trying on all womans pant(less embarressing that way).
Good Luck and Happy Shopping!

what are the current trends in clothes shops?
Q. I have a job interview in a clothes shop and was wondering what current fashion trends are.

A. I don't follow women's fashion but I can provide the guys' trends for fall 2012 through summer 2013, or at least how they're predicted to be. This is according to major runway shows in Europe, so trends in American stores or unique shops will vary.

Some general trends: Slim pants/jeans (sometimes skinny), rolled up once or twice, JACKETS, hairstyles that are short on the sides/back and styled on top, accessories like watches and bracelets always make you look more stylish

Fall 2012 has some very light blues and oranges leftover from summer 2012 but they're only thrown in. Mainly, it's getting darker with blacks and grays, occasionally an obscure white or yellow dominated outfit. "A play on fabric" as Armani calls it is trendy, mixing different patterns and fabrics that you wouldn't normally match, as long as they go together in color. Outfits should stay simple and sleek though.

Winter 2012-13 is best described as "dark" and sometimes "tribal" with almost all black, brown and gray on jackets, pants and shoes/belts. Fabric play still revealant: For example, charcoal sweater with leather jacket throw-over.

Spring/summer 2013 should be sleek and include Mediterranean colors not only in just clothes but especially accessories. Like turquoise belts/shoes, bags and shirt accents. "Easter" colors is a good way to put it also. The base colors are blue and green.

what are the hottest and trendiest mens sneakers out right now?

Q.

A. Boat shoes are pretty big right now. Almost all the kids in my school have a pair. They have the Vans ones. Terrible quality and they just rip. I have the real deal leather ones. :)

The biggest brand for teenagers is probably Vans.
For the sports guys, Nike Air Force 1's, and also Air Jordans made by nike.

what shoe would you want?
Q. if sum1 designed a new style of shoe..wat would u like?
wat colours and styles of sho would u want..that hasnt been made before
im jus wonderin

A. i as a teenager would want a shoe that a normal high school person could wear to school without standing out too much.I love pumps and wedges and im a big fan of platforms. But if i wore that to school people would think im crazy.Something any teenager could wear and have confidence yet still feel comfortable.Maybe a whole line of shoes.for different styles/colors based on the person.Mainly preps/trendies/and tomboys.I would get an inspiration from hollister,abercrombie,forever21,and charlotte russe.Put all those styles together.

Testimonials from Young Plus Size Women on Clothes Shopping?

Q. I would like to hear of some testimonials/opinions on clothes shopping from young, plus size women. How hard is it to find clothes that fit that are actually sold in stores at the mall? Or to find plus size clothes in the mall that are actually stylish or that don't look like it came from your grandmother's closet? Is it frusterating to order plus size clothes from an online store or catalog, only to find out that they don't fit right? I would love to hear any and all stories you have about these and anything else clothes shopping related you would like to share. I will be using this information as background research for a college-level speech I am giving on the need of more plus size stores and selections in todays malls, because not everyone can order clothes from an online store and be satisfies with the fit (something they would have been able to avoid if they were shopping in a real store in the mall). Thanks so much in advance for any and all stories you are able to share.

A. I don't know if I qualify as "young" (early 30's), but I also have difficulty finding clothes that fit - I don't even bother going to the stores anymore. As much as I'd love to get items from Express or some of the other more trendy stores, that is not an option. Even Ann Taylor, Dress Barn, Talbots, etc., do not carry much in my size range (28). Lane Bryant has become Lame Bryant. Even buying items online can be difficult for "supersized" women. Since when was a 16 considered "plus"??? Invariably, the pants I order are too short and few plus sized stores carry talls - or at least, they don't carry many.

This same problem applies to shoes. I wear a 10 - 10 1/2 wide. Wal*Mart, Payless, etc... good luck! If you want nice, decent shoes, you'll pay a fortune - IF you can find it in your size! Even Zappas doesn't have a great selection for those of us with big feet.

I've begun ordering clothes a size larger and then altering them when they come in.

Yes, we should be thinner for our health, etc.. What do we wear in the meantime, though?

Where can I find fashionable plus size shoes?
Q. Does anyone know where I can buy either in a store or online trendy plus size shoes like for a size 12 womans foot? Every website I find has real ugly and outdated shoes. HELPP!
anddd... I'm not a monster, I'm just really tall at 6'1 so its hard for me to find tall lengths and bigger shoes =(

A. I believe Payless goes up to a 13. Nordstrom is always a good bet - they started out as a hard to find shoe specialist, way back when, and have kept that aspect of their business up even after re-focusing to fashion.

There are quite a few more listed in our shoe directory, that notes sizes (and widths) at:

A. Most women live by the mantra, if the shoe fits, buy it. But just because a shoe is cute and it fits, doesn't mean you should buy it and wear it. What most enthusiastic shoppers don't realize is that what type of shoe you wear can dramatically affect how your legs look. Here, Danica Lo, author of How Not to Look Fat offers tips about what shoes look best on different leg types.

Carrie Bradshaw, you're not alone. Nearly every woman I know is madly, deeply, hopelessly devoted to the pursuit of the perfect shoe.

It's certainly no surprise. Shoes fit you, even on your fat days. And a "feature shoe" can be the key element in constructing a stylish outfit. Never mind that footwear can also make or break the proportions of any outfit - and your figure.

The enduringly fashionable high-heel slingback, available in flattering beiges and browns every fall, is incredibly graceful and leg-lengthening - though, truth be told, a smidge officey and boring. On the other hand, wearing a kitten heel, even if it's the trendiest shoe du jour, will make you look like you're so fat that you've squashed your heel down.

Then there is the classic mid-heel D'Orsay pump - possibly the most universally flattering shoe ever designed - worn on the runway and in photo shoots by nearly every model in the '80s and early '90s. These days, D'Orsay pumps are considered more classic, less fashion-fashion shoes and can be found everywhere from your local Payless Shoe Source to the Manolo Blahnik boutique. It's a style that's prevailed because it's flattering.

If your gams happen to be on the slightly less-coltish side, try a chunky or sculpted heel for balance - and to avoid the corndogs-on-sticks look you might get with stilettos.

The basic rule is simple: the chunkier the leg, the chunkier the heel ought to be. It's all about proportions, baby.

It's also all about shunning ankle straps, which "sever" your leg at your ankle. They make your legs look shorter. And we all need shorter legs like we need holes in our heads.
Dictionary of Shoes

Chunky Heel Pump: The rule is: The chunkier the leg, the chunkier the heel.

Slingback: In a fleshtone color, this shoe is sexy and slimming.

Stiletto Slide: Pick one that's cut lower in front to lengthen your leg line and show off your cute toes.

Bad Mule: Cut too high, mules have leg shortening effect.

UGG Boot: The bigger the shoe, the thinner your leg will look.

Good Mule: Cut lower, the mule is a graceful, ladylike shoe that won't break up the line of your leg.

D'Orsay Pump: The ultimate skinny shoe.

Bad Mary Jane: Ankle straps "sever" the leg from the foot and make legs look shorter and wider.

Sculpted Heels: They can enhance the grace of a thick ankle.

Ballet Flat: Lower cut is more leg lengthening and more flattering.

Look for: Nude, fleshtone, or neutral colors will blend better with your skin, your hosiery, or whatever you're wearing to extend your leg line and make your gams look longer.

Pointed toes elongate the foot and, ergo, the leg. Round toes are second best. Stay away from square toes entirely - they make your feet look like blocks.

A chunky, curved heel is a good, safe bet as well. Some of the best and most durable chunky heels come from mid-priced stores like Kenneth Cole and Nine West since, let's face it, rich people have little use for chunky heels. (See, the reason super-expensive shoes tend to have toothpick-width heels is because the women who can afford to blow $1,500 on a pair of pumps don't actually have to walk anywhere if they don't want to.)

For fat feet: If you're going to wear street sneakers, pick Converse. They make your feet look tiny.

Pick your battles: You can pick your battles - big shoes like Terry de Havilland platforms (from the 1960s, but reissued last year - they're a fashion it-girl favorite), Doc Martens, or UGGs make your feet and ankles look huge but you legs look thinner. After all, the bigger the shoe, the thinner your leg.

Boots: I've suffered my whole life from a pervasive fear of fall footwear. Since my calves, which measure 15.5 inches around, are bigger than my neck (no joke), I've always thought of myself, pitifully, as a casualty of the boot-making world.

Until last winter.

After spending so many years freezing my big legs off, I'd nearly given up on finding boots that fit. Then, one fateful day, the fashion gods smiled upon me and I found fabulous knee-high boots by Belgian designer Ann Demeulmeester that fit like a glove.

Since then, not only have I become an avid collector of all things Demuelmeester (she makes hats that fit my humongous head too!), but I've been on the hunt for other designer boots that fit larger calves. Cole Haans are pretty darn good too.

Boots are like potato chips. Once you start, you can't have just one.

Top tip: Measure you calves around their widest point, then call stores and ask how wide their widest boots are. This will drive sales staff nutso, but will save you hours in the mall.

The widest calf span I've ever found was a pair of slouchy nappa leather stilettos - they measured eighteen inches around. That's like the size of a cantaloupe! Don't give up people! Big boots are out there!

If you've fallen in love with boots that don't fit, seek out your local cobbler - boots can be stretched as a last resort.

If you're not too keen on the hunt, opt instead for a slightly lower boot - one that ends midcalf. Lace-up boots are adjustable for different calf sizes. And some boots are more sculpted and curvy through the heel, which makes your legs instantly look curvier and sexier, no matter what size they are.

Some great shapes for boots: tall and slouch; riding boots; slim-fitting ankle-covering boots with sculpted stiletto heels.

Socks: For every shoe, there's a sock. Just make sure you can't see it.

Socks that end at your ankles do the same thing ankle straps do - they visually sever your legs at that point. Pick secret socks - ones that hide in your shoes instead. You can get these everywhere. Gap makes some great ones called "Not Socks" but if you can't find any, just fold your socks down into your shoes.

For your own good: Don't wear lace-up ankle boots with skirts. Victorian Shmictorian. Who cares whether it's hot or not - it just looks terrible.

A. I hope i answered your question.

Well you cant forget about the neutrels, burmuda shorts, and dont forget the wedge shoes.

Seasonal Color Trends

This season's Spring colors are more subdued and romantic. Powdery pastels in baby blue, apricot, pale yellow, and light shades of green will bring out your feminine side. Paired with classic neutrals such as black, white and taupe, you're sure to find shades that suit you best.

Summer Fabrics

The new Spring and Summer season brings back some great classic fabrics. Now you'll be seeing more light, lacy fabrics and the basic cotton stretch. Spandex-inspired designs offer comfort and versatility that allow women of all shapes and sizes to enjoy. Dresses and skirts in flowing chiffon and silk are sure to please those looking for a feminine, classy look. Great for work and fun!

Patterns

For those who prefer color, go bright and bold. For style and sophistication, opt for luscious garden prints, retro patterns and black and white geometrical shapes. Many cultures add to ethnic styles with colorful patterns mixed with rich, earth tones.

For a classical look, preppy polo shirts give you stripes galore! The further apart the stripes, the larger you may appear. If you're concerned, choose tops with stripes closer together, with only two colors. Diagonal lines can be rather slimming if they're narrow and meet at the front. Vertical stripes on trousers are a must-have, but only paired with a solid shirt or blouse.

Style Trends

This summer brings some new, exciting fashion trends. With warmer weather moving in, women want simple, feminine styles. Traditional, tailored clothing are classic and will always be a shoe-in for business, weddings, or formal events. Layer your clothing to switch from work to play. Keep your classics cleaned and pressed for impromptu summer events and activities.

Look for denim blue jeans that are cuffed at least 3" deep with sexy, flat sandals. Cool things off with a tank top to expose your shoulders. Don't go light on support, invest in a seasonal bra that has clear or removable straps. Look for tanks and halters that have a built-in bra for style and convenience.

Spring's knee-length skirts flow naturally for eye-catching appeal. Solid colors and subtle designs are more traditional while unique patterns allow us to show personality and pizzazz. Faded denim is always a hit for a rock concert or wild night in the city.

Combine a basic tee, gypsy-style skirt, and flip-flops to gain immediate attention. For a more sophisticated look, pair a great flouney skirt with a stylish tank top. Sandals or wedge shoes in a neutral color compliment most styles and are practical for warmer weather.

Trendy, military inspired clothing shows your support and is an instant hit for casual wear. Take your pick from light cotton cargos, camouflage, walking shorts, and belted jackets. Be creative and accessorize with a belt and dog tags.

Modern Accents and Accessories

The upcoming Spring fashions accentuate unique personalities and bring with it some of Winter's hottest trends in accessories and jewelry.

For necklaces, think layers and match up with funky beads and symbolic pendants.

Bangle bracelets and watches adorned with etchings or glitter.

Toe rings, thumb rings, body jewelry.

Chunky, ethnic pieces. Old fashioned designs.

Sunglasses with oversized frames and lenses.

A flirty sarong for the beach.

Open-backed slides with sequin accents and beads.

Hot Makeup Trends:

What's hot this Summer? Makeup adds definition to the face and this season brings earthy shades with defined cheeks. For those who are a little more conservative, taupe will lift your spirit and look great in pictures. Both peaches and corals radiate a youthful glow -- and can take years off of your face. From eye shadow, cheeks, to lips, pink gives you a healthy look, while underplaying fine lines and wrinkles.

who want to buy boots on summer?
Q. i don't mean summer boots
but winter boots
like those http://www.kicksexpress.com/women-shoes/women-boots.html
i love , beacuse i think it's cheaper now!

A. There are a lot of cute boots in the link you provide. But whose to say, you're supposed to wear ANYTHING at any particular time of the year? If you get fuzzy warm boots and want to wear them during the summer, it's not prob-- just wear them with cute short shorts, a sun dress, or a flirty skirt. I think that would look summery and trendy.

Good sandals to wear Spring 2011?

Q. Okay, well, to start, I'm a teen girl (high school). Also, I'm VERY self-concious about the way my feet (mostly toes) look. They're not exactly pretty... at all! haha.... So, what are some good sandals to wear in Spring/Summer 2011 that either don't show the toes or would make me feel better about my feet... thanks! :)

A. I'm self conscious about my feet too! Want to know what's really trendy for the Spring/Summer 2011 shoe season? The Sperrys Top Siders! They are so so comfortable- I have two pairs! 2011 back to school fashion?
Q. i was wondering what are the musts for back to school, im going in to 8th grade?? like what is the big thing this year?? and when i go back to school shopping what should i get?? okk thanks!

A. I'm going to 8th too! *High Fives* :)

Must haves:

Jeans- (2-3), in a style you like. Skinny jeans are trendy, but bootcuts are making a comeback.

Shorts- (2-3), for summer. Mix up the types of fabric, like don't stick with denim. Bright colors are really in, so I suggest getting maybe 2 pairs in a cool color like yellow/red. You can wear these with a plain, tucked in top with a skinny belt. Super cute!

Skirts- (2), go for ruffles and florals, kinda like what I said about the shorts.

Cardigans- (2-3), go for a plain white/black/grey one that you can wear with anything, then 1-2 in a fun bright color! Cardigans can dress up and down outfits, and are a nice touch to just about any outfit.

Tops- (Go crazy). You can never have enough! Don't forget the basic camis. Lace, ruffles, crop tops, and florals are really in right now. Also, to go with the trendy bohemian look, try flowy tops with a cool cut. Off the shoulder tops are also cute, especially when they're cropped.

Trends this year:

Color blocking: This is when you use a bright color to spruce up an outfit, for example wearing a bright red shoe with a plain black outfit. Fun colors are awesome, don't be afraid of them though!

Bohemian: Braids, florals, drapery, you know it.

Tribal: Tribal prints are really big, as well as feathers- as earrings, in your hair, etc.

Check out stores like Forever 21 or Charlotte Russe. They have super trendy clothing, for pretty good prices.

Hope this helped!

I wear a size 12 wide in women's shoes. (yeah, I heard that gasp) Where can I find cute & trendy shoes?

Q.

A. I wear size 11 in some styles and I have enough trouble finding shoes, I can't imagine finding 12's. I really don't understand why they can't make larger sizes.

You should try Torrid. A friend told me about it recently. They have plus size clothing mostly, but they also carry size 11 and 12 shoes. They have them in many malls and they also have a website.

And it's not as if you can help the size of your feet! I can't believe how rude people are.

Where can I find nice, trendy shoes that come in larger sizes (11-12 women's) that are decently priced?
Q. I've got big feet, and a small budget. Any suggestions?
I'm mainly looking for a cute pair of sneakers. (:

A. Steve Madden has extented sizes.

Where can I buy these shoes?

Q. I really want a pair of the 5 finger shoes for women. The only place I can think of buying them would be off on online, but I hate buying anything that I haven't tried on and seen in person.

What stores sell them? Thanks.

A. You can get them at any warehouse shoe sale or foot action. I got mine at warehouse shoe sale there way cheap like $50.00 or less. They don't carry them at foot locker cause there not considered "trendy" just watch though they'll have them sooner or later.

what are some cute & trendy shoes that you really like?

Q. I'm looking to ask for a closed toe shoe for christmas, that are NOT sneakers, is there any particular pair of shoes that you are wearing right now (and that you really like?). thanks so much for your help! I'd like something other than uggs. I'm 5' 4" and about 80 lbs, and uggs do not look good on my skinny legs!

A. I am really loving some of the trends with boots right now (hopefully they fall under the category that you're looking for)! The boots that I've been looking at are more tight fitted and have more of the fake leather look. For example...

Stylish but not Trendy Casual Shoes for Men?

Q. I am a man looking for a different type of shoe. I have a pair of Jordan High tops and White Nike Low tops for casual wear. I hate when people jump on the bandwagon for fashion and getting something just because everyone else has it. For example, in my high school, Vans Authentic shoes and Sperry boating shoes (Boys & Girls) are very popular. I really like the Vans, but everybody has them and I refuse to buy them.

It would be nice if people could leave some suggestions on some shoes that are stylish and attractive (FOR MEN) but not really trendy. I'm sure that it will be mostly women that answer this question, so this is the question for the women. What do you think looks attractive on men?

Also, I am in high school. I'm an upperclassmen. Thanks! :)

A. Confidence looks attractive.

As far as footwear: loafers, oxfords/brogues, sneakers, tennis/running shoes, sandals, boots, boat shoes (Sperry's are a classic, not a trend. My grandfather has lived in them [and moccasins] for as long as I have been alive), moccasins, etc.

Tip for trendy shoes... ?
Q. I wears converses all time and I wants a different style of shoe.. I'm sixteen and is there any good stylish walking shoes for me? I'm from Canada. Don't give out some American stores that aren't in Canada.
Thanks!

A. Brand NameUGG Boots
OriginalAustralia
MaterialsSheepskin
UGG advantage: versatility, super warm, comfortable, cute
UGG disadvantage: heavy, wearing them will make you seems stubborn
For what people: women, men, old, young all people
What to wear with: jeans, legging, trench and so on.
