What are classic pieces that every woman should have in her wardrobe?

Q. I am looking to update my wardrobe, and want items that won't go out of style.

A. Jeans and Pants

Two pairs of trousers which vary in style. Wide-legged pants or man-style trousers and another pair that are a more timeless, classic cut.
Two pairs of jeans in different cuts. Fitted, straight legged or flared and wide-legged or man style. This can include skinny jeans if you have the body shape to wear them.

Coats and Jackets

A really great, well-cut coat. A timeless trench will take you from season to season.
Two jackets. One that can be teamed with pants and the other that looks good over dresses.

Dresses and Tops

Long-sleeved T-shirts or tops in varying weights but in basic colours such as black, white or cream.
One classic, fitted white shirt, crisp and classy.
A cashmere sweater and cardigan in a V-neck and round neck.
A few great day dresses which are easy to wear and versatile for any occasion. One of these should be the indispensable wrap dress smart, sexy and timeless.
A colorful evening dress which makes you feel great.
The ultimate little black dress.

Handbags and Shoes

One pair of wild look-at-me, statement shoes for those times you want to be noticed.
A pair of versatile,sophisticated black medium-heeled courts.
Comfortable ballet flats in different styles and colors.
A pair of walking boots and a pair of statement boots, fashionable and trendy.
One really serious handbag which brings class to an outfit and that you are proud to wear.

Accessories Jewelry and Sunglasses

A few pairs of sunglasses in different colors and styles.
An ever growing range of fun costume jewelry high street and vintage, which allows you to update your outfits and show your individuality.

What should you say on the phone to a job you applied for to see about your application?

Q. I applied for a job and I want to see what's going on, but I'm not really sure what to say when I call.

A. Persistence and etiquette go a long way in applying for a job.
Give a call and ask to speak to the Human Resource manager or the office manager or owner depending on the type of business.
Be sure to get their name and correct spelling.
If they are unavailable ask as to when they would be.
It is not always advisable to tell the person who you are and the nature of your call because they may be what is referred to as a gate keeper, meaning their job is to screen what is and isn't important and they can be very subjective in their view.
Ask the person in charge if they have received your application and if everything was in order or is there additional information they need.
Inquire as to what the time frame is as to when they plan to finalize a decision.
Tell the person you are looking forward to setting up an interview and thank them for their time.
If you do not have their correct street address and spelling of the name for the person with whom you spoke call back and ask it of the person answering the phone, and or check on line.
Write out a simple thank you card- (you can even pick up packs at a Dollar store or for a few bucks at a retailer)
Your note should read
Dear Mr/Mrs_______
Thank you for taking my call on date_____
It was a pleasure speaking with you.
I look forward to meeting you in person when we schedule an interview.
Sincerely
Name______
Telephone #_________
Email____________
Not those exact words are necessary but a polished cool professional approach.
After your interview be sure to send a second thank you.
Dear________
It was a pleasure meeting you.
I am looking forward to the opportunity of working with Company name______________, and know I would be an asset to you.
Thank you for taking the time to review my application/resume as well as the interview.
Sincerely
Name________
Phone#_________
Email__________________
All ways be sure to be polite.
Hold yourself confidently in your body posture, not cocky but assured of yourself.
(Smile, have good eye contact, shake the persons hand, sit up in the chair, speak in clear complete sentences, no snorts, eye rolls or ya sure, no ticks like tapping, shaking a foot, etc)
Dress professionally.
A clean ironed solid color button down shirt is preferred with a clean properly fitting pair of pants. This works for both men and women in most setting.
Anything baggy, dragging the ground, ripped, see through, to short, showing skin and tattoos is out.
No thong underwear or ones that have a panty line or show though (dont go without underwear though) or bras that create lines and bulges.
No cloths that are being held together by safety pins, tape or unmatched thread.
If the pants dont stay around your waist with the shirt tucked in then dont wear them.
Women can wear the tail of their shirt out if it is presentable.
A simple belt is fine but nothing drastic, like studs and skulls, with chains hanging.
Keep make- up simple and light. Jewelry to a minimum.
Any piercing other then an ear should be taken out.
Hair neat and clean- no spikes, colors or greasy gels.
Shoes should be clean and in good shape- shoe polish can do a lot to dress up worn shoes.
A darker shoe like black or brown is best and not real trendy and chunky.
For a woman a hand bag that is small to medium matching her out fit or black, brown or tan in a simple design is best.
No Gum.
Be sure you have eaten before you go, have brushed your teeth, and have mints in your pocket.
If these clothing choices are not in your closet get them. You can find them even at thrift stores which won't kill your pocket book.
It is best to have two shirts in case you get called back for a second interview.
A rule of thumb is wear the lighter color of shirt first, color can intimidate or give the wrong first impression in an interview.
These may sound silly or simple, but there a lot people passed over for these simple reasons.
Carry a pen and a copy of your resume. If you do not have a resume create one. There are a number of simple templates on line check around like schools and job centers for free help in creating resumes.

What are the best fashion trends in Manila right now?
Q. Like what type of shoes are popular and what colors of clothing so people wear right now. What kind of purses do they use huge hobo bags? little wrist purses

A. Filipinos generally follow international trends. It's easy, with the availability of news, and international stores in most malls (Zara, Nine West, Mango, Top Shop/Dorothy Perkins, DKNY, Guess, and many more, including expensive stuff like LV, Gucci, Coach, Burberry, etc.) They do not necessarily buy from the stores named above, and know where to find value for money. Filipinos are generally not big spenders and have mostly classics and a few trendy pieces. They have an eye for good trends that would last beyond a short season. They usually prefer comfort rather than suffer, although depending on occasion, they would be willing to grin and bear it.

Big spacious bags & totes in different designs & materials, as well as wrist purses, depending on where they are going.

Women's shoes range from strappy flats & ballet shoes, to kitten heels, wedge heels, and four inch heels with either thin straps or those thick studded straps, and semi-boots. They wear fully closed, sling-back & peeptoe for office shoes, in sensible heels. The toebox could either be pointy, round or square. They also have good walking sandals and slip-ons with rubber soles, flip flops, crocs, sneakers and running shoes.

What should I wear for a walking date?

Q. I am thinking of taking my date for a walk I am not sure what to wear I am thinking of dress shoes polo and jeans. But dress shoes for sure and I am a boy I also will be walking far to so let me know

A. Taking your girl for a date requires comfortable attire and sturdy shoes. A good pair of orthotics would serve you well, but might be too "old" for you. In that case, I think you should wear a trendy well-fitting tee and jeans with sneaks. You sound like a preppy kid, so that should do well. Perhaps ice cream for the end. Good luck.

I bought a pair of shoes but they are one size too big. What can I put inside them to make them fit?
Q.

A. I have the same problem, except all of my shoes are too big.
I use comfort padding from 'Boots' feet section, cut into strips and then stuck into the toes. I have to do this to all of my shoes because my feet are a size 3 and I have to wear orthotics - needless to say unless you are 12 years old, manufacturers don't make small, trendy shoes that fit orthotics (I am 32!).
Get the extra thick comfy padding and cut thin strips and stick into the toe section. If you stick it on the heel, I find it feels wierd because the shoe heel doesn't fit well, plus it looks really ugly.
Tuff luck if you have open toe sandals, I have to buy kids sandals!
Warning - Make sure your toes aren't too squashed at the end of the shoe, I use 2/3 layers of thick padding for shoes that are 1 size too big.
I am not a podiatrist and my podiatrist will kill me if she finds out that this is what I do to make trendy shoes fit my feet, but it does work!

what are some good sturdy shoes that i can wear when walking around in europe?

Q. we will be walking a lot visiting museums, etc... for four months.

but here's the catch - i'm a huge fashionista - i refuse to wear ugly sneakers or hiking boots.

instead of calling me a prima donna (haha)...
...do you have any suggestions as to what kind of shoes i can bring on my trip? the weather in most places will be moderate. they should be sturdy, durable, comfortable, closed-toed, but also somewhat fashionable.

thank you all!
<3
=]

A. When I travel I like to bring Converse (all stars). They come in every color, are comfortable, easy to keep clean, and are classic with a touch of both trendy and retro styles.

They are so slim and easy to pack that I can easily fit 2 pairs into a small bag.

I find most (hiking) boots quite clunky for everyday wear.

How to Dress for NYC in November?
Q. I'll be in NYC in early November. I live in Florida and so I have no idea how to dress for cold weather, usually I just throw on a sweatshirt.

How cold does it get in NY around that time, and do you have to wear a coat, or is a sweater OK? Also, what kind of shoes do you recommend, like trendy boots or tennis shoes (walking a lot). Thanks.
thanks for the answers yall! They were all very helpful.

A. 1. Take a shower
2. Dry yourself off with a towel
3. Slide on some underwear
4. I usually do pants next
5. Now time for a shirt
6. If you don't already have socks on, put them on... otherwise you're ready to slip into some shoes.
7. Now put on a jacket, scarf, whatever you think will look good and keep you warm. It's easier to take stuff off than it is to put more on.
8. Congratulations! You have successfully dressed yourself! Keep in mind that this works no matter what city you are in. This method actually even works in other countries! Now step outside and enjoy the day in the comfort and convenience of modern clothing!

Just kidding. It's already in the low 60's during the day, high 40's at night. So you'll want a jacket, coat, hat, whatever. I'm still fine in a light hoodie, but peoples heat and cold tolerances vary so it's a good idea to come wearing more and take it off than it is to come wearing less and wish you had brought more. I personally wear Converse shoes year round, so boots aren't necessary. Just depends on how accustomed you are to long walks.
Have fun.

Are there any other nice places to shop for CUTE plus size clothes?

Q. Hi there, I am a Lane Bryant and Torrid fan. I can also find cute clothes at Nordstrom's and Macy's. However, I am not interested in looking like anyone's Granny. Any ideas on other places or websites that sell cute plus size clothes that are well made?

Thanks!

A. I feel your pain! I usually find great clothes at those stores, but some of them aren't my style. I can usually find great basic pieces... like dress pants, button up shirts, and jeans at Macy*s and Lane Bryant but I like the hip stuff too!

In my area, these are the places I go to...

Goody's. Believe it or not, they have a small section in the Plus Size women's department called Junior Plus. I bought some of my favorite summer outfits from there this year. They usually have the trendy stuff, too! I like their summer tops and shorts!

Ross. If you have one of these near you, I suggest that you go! Their Woman's World section usually has a bunch of clothes for the older lady, but they also have a lot of cute style clothes. I got some really cute hoodies and tops there this fall. When I go there, I usually find 90430344909085 things or NOTHING. It can really be hit or miss. If you take the time to look through each hanger, you will find some cute stuff. They go up to a size 4X too. Oh, and check out their dresses! They have a ton of dresses in Plus Size!

Cato. There is a Cato right down the road from me. They have Petite and Plus. What is cool is that anything that they have in Petite... they have the same exact thing in Plus. I hate going by a window and being like... "That outfit is so cute!" only to find out that it only goes up to a size 12. :( Again, you really have to look through the racks, but I have bought some nice stuff there. Also, they have a shoe section with plenty of wides and size 9, 10, 11.

Fashion Bug. While their stuff is usually lower quality, they do gear a lot of their clothes to the younger crowd. They usually have awesome dresses and stuff. I have a hard time finding dresses for weddings and events like that, but Fashion Bug has come through for me a lot. And they have cute underwear, especially if you like thongs and boyshorts.

Believe it or not, I do like to shop at Wal*Mart and Target sometimes. I find great basics like velvet pant suits, long sleeve t-shirts, and capris/shorts.

OldNavy. They used to have a better selection in the store, but they have gone exlusively online for their Plus Sizes. If you know what size you are, then you can shop there. I try not to buy online because I like to try something on, but I am really familiar with their sizes. OldNavy is probably one of my favorite places for summer clothing.

Those are my usual spots! I wish you luck because I know how hard it is to find something that looks cute and is flattering to our body type! Good luck!

How can i dress like a preppy girl?

Q. i want to dress preppy now.!any suggestion.!
can you put together a outfit for me?
colors i love-pink,green,yellow
colors i hate-dark purple

A. Personally, I think the best style type is preppy because it is classic and never goes out of style. Here are some basic steps:

1. The attitude: Always present yourself in a nice and welcoming manner. Be polite and courteous with girls, boys, and teachers. Never be snobby and don't try too hard.
2. The clothes: Wear clean cut, classic clothes, but they do not have to be trendy. Places like Abercrombie and Hollister are not preppy, unless you buy the really simple items. Try J.Crew, Lacoste, etc. Wear skirts, khaki, polos, bermuda shorts and bright colors. The staples of the preppy style are oxford shirts, polo shirts, and sweaters/cardigans. anything simple and of a solid color will work! The Jackie Cardigan is also a good, classic choice. Also, try a cute blazer over a simple dress. Also, for jeans, don't have any rips in them. Some good colors for clothes include pastels in pink, blue, green, and yellow or neutrals such as off white and brown.
3. Accessories: Always wear accessories, but not too many. Try pearl jewelry such as pearl studs. Also wear ribbon belts in different colors.
4. Shoes: Clean white tennis shoes are cute, or leather or suede ballet flats. No sneakers or Uggs. If you want boots try leather or suede slouch boots or straight leg boots... classic!
5. Hair: Make sure your hair is always well cleaned and conditioned. Don't do the same thing every day, mix it up! Try ribbons in a ponytail, headbands, and pigtails.
6. Always keep clean: Brush your hair, take care of your teeth, and smell nice.
7. Most importantly.... HAVE CONFIDENCE!!! Focus on your inner beauty and never let anybody tell you who you should be.

Where to buy designer clothes in English stores?
Q. I know of Harvey Nichols, but which other shops sell expensive handbags (YSL, Chloe, Marc Jacobs etc), shoes (Jimmy Choo, Laboutin and Manalos), and generally expensive clothes and accessories?

Ideally in locations such as Sheffield, Nottingham, Leeds, Lincoln or London.

Thanks for you help! x

A. Hey ;)

In Central London the actual Chloe shop is there in Sloane Street. Also in London you sometimes find their range in Harrod's (Brompton Road, Knightsbridge) and Selfridges (in Oxford Street). You can also buy from there online at http://www.net-a-porter.com/Shop/Designers/Chloe. It doesn't look like they offically sell anywhere else apart from in Harvey Nichols in Leeds (which you obviously already know).

Jimmy Choo also sell their range in their shop in London, also in Selfridges and Harrod's.

Your best bet, if you can be bothered to travel all that way, is to go to London and go in Selfridges or Harrod's or Harvey Nichols..

GAH http://bluefly.com/ do sell some really nice dresses but they don't ship to the UK :[ so that's not much help..

I want to buy some boots for haloween but i dont want to spend a forturn. not only for halloween but in general because shoes are sooo damn pricey! specially for a student! so if anyone knows of any stores that sells trendy, nice shoes let me know!

A. There is a good place in Kingsgate mall that sells exotic shoes. If you are looking for clothes, check out Imaginary Creatures, they sell american apparel for half price in Vancouver :)

What types of footwear looks well with an abaya in a school setting?

Q. For those who're wondering: The abaya is a huge long length dress like a cloak that covers the whole body including arms and legs. They are made out of silk/cotton and worn over Muslim womens' normal dresses.

Now sneakers/runnign shoes don't look at all good with an abaya, so what would do?

A. Hi :)

with an abaya, focus on the color.. If your Abaya is black you can wear black shoes or funky colors that match the scarf, the purse and your accessories

as to what shoes.. during the summer/ warm days :

- Flats (so cute with the abaya)

- Flip flops.. just chose a decent model, I hate it when girls come to the university with beach slippers and call that flip flops.. or any flat open sandals..
Go crazy with the nail polish color and match to the accessories ;) . Revlon and may other brands offer those polishes that you put on and take off by peeling them. Quick and easy
- If you're not afraid of high heels, they can be very feminine especially with a black abaya.. They take it to a hole new level.
- Sneakers are fine but I I don't like them on abaya. I think they can do with a funky outfit, like a colored scarf, and a long sweater and pants (in a neutral color then you match the sneakers to the scarf for example.

For cold days, it gets harder because the abaya is especially designed for the desert and hot weather.. If you insist on wearing the abaya, chose a thick material to match the winter shoes. Wear them with ankle boots (very trendy this fall)

All the best honey ;) XoxO

What kind of shoes to wear to cold, outdoor wedding?
Q. I will be traveling to Washington state for a fall beach wedding, which will probably be pretty windy and cold so sandals are out. It's not a super fancy affair, somewhere between casual and dressy (like nice sweater, skirt or dressy jeans). But anyway, I'm not really sure what kind of shoes to wear because of the cold, the sand and trying to look nice. Any ideas?

A. Flat boots..

Key fashion for spring/summer 11?

Q. What would you say is essential for this season.
What colour dresses for parties green?
Hair accesories?
Makeup?
What sort of shoes?
Shorts/skirts/dresses?
High waist trousers/ jeans?
Hairstyles?
What are you moat excited about this season and bulid a outfit at the bottom which you think best reptesnts this season and get 10 poits
And what will you be wearing

A. I did a complete guide on spring fashion trends on the runways:
http://heyyysunshine.blogspot.com/2011/02/spring-2011-runway-highlights-trends.html

Out of all of these trends my favorite would have to be the feminine look. I love ruffles, lace, florals, and volume! I think the pretties color of the season is Pantone's 2011 Color of the Year: Honeysuckle. Flatforms have made a huge comeback but I don't know if I can pull them off instead I'll just go with a trendy wedge or cute pointed flats. Fuller skirts, high-waisted shorts, and a sheath or shirt dresses pulled together with a cinch belt would be a cute look i might wear. Dainty flower hair accessories would be a nice touch in a tousled back messy bun. I hear that going darker, golden, or reddish is hot this season so I think I'm going to get golden highlights to lighten up my look! I'm not so sure with make up but I know that with nail polish hot colors are like an earthy color (essie st. tropez) and a tiffany box or robin's egg blue.

Spring trends for 2011? Need SERIOUS fashion help!?
Q. Hey y'all.

So basically, I'm a sweat pants and sweat shirt type of gal. I kind of fell into the winter blues this year, which naturally meant me slumming it out at school in messy sweats every day. I don't think there's anything wrong with sweats (at all) but when it becomes an everyday thing (and when I'm even wearing stained ones) it kind of becomes problematic. I also gained a little bit of weight this winter which also makes me want to hide away in sweats (for lack of a less dramatic term).

It's starting to warm up a little bit again and I'm really wanting to look cute for the 2011 spring and summer! I'm saving up a little bit from my job so I can afford a little bit more because I am in SERIOUS need of new clothes; most of mine are ripped, stained, stretched, or just way to old and worn out. I have enough to pretty much buy the spring essentials, but I was just wondering about you would recommend me to buy for this new year.

Please provide really detailed examples and if you'd like to (I'd love you for it), post links of things you think are cute or that I should add to my closet. I'm basically fashion challenged so post anything you think is cute AND COMFORTABLE. :) Comfort is key for me!
And listen ... any input is greatly appreciated ... anything at all!!

Thanks so much in advance!
Sorry for the grammar mistakes ... I just noticed a bunch of them. Oops!

and THANKS so much for the answers so far.

A. First off, stock up on tons of basics. It's different for every girl, but they should just be pieces that you wear A LOT (jeans, shirts, etc.) and that fit your personal style the best. They should also be pieces that you can wear throughout the seasons, winter, spring, summer. Since you're going to be wearing these a lot, splurge more on basics. The more basics you have, the more options. For example, some of my basics are:

Blazers
White oxfords or button downs
Tights in tons of patterns and colors
Slouchy cardigans
A pair of HIGH heels
Tons of vintage jewelry
A-line skirts (I'm short and petite)
A leather handbag

This way, you won't need to purchase a completely new wardrobe. Just mix in the basics you have with your trendier and warmer pieces. Since it's spring, instead of completely renovating my wardrobe, I only need to buy several things like linen shorts, floral dresses, etc. In the long term, it will save you a LOT of money. And when Fall comes around use the same basics to match with newer purchases.

That's why it's best to spend more money on things you wear a lot. I always buy trendier pieces at cheap stores like Forever 21 because they have SO many styles and whatnot at good prices.e As for my basics, I get them high-end at places like Comme des Garcons, Opening Ceremony, or Barneys. It can be expensive but since they have amazing sales on good basic items, I don't need to buy too many things. As for shoes, I always splurge on these. After all, you're going to be walking around in them all day. Instead of concentrating on quantity, focus on QUALITY. My basics have lasted me for years since I get them cleaned seasonally. Take care of your clothes and they take care of you.

Hope I helped!

are there thrift stores in dallas that sell athletic shoes?

Q. not consignment shops i need thrift stores that sell athletic shoes, they dont have to be name brand i just need something that is actually mad efor athletics and not just look alikes. how much do shoes usually go for in thrift stores or goodwill, or plato's closet or buffallo exchange?

A. I always give my old New Balance and Adidas to Goodwill and Salvation Army so, yes, they have athletic shoes. If you wear a woman's size 6 you would have hit the mother-load with my old running shoes.Stock depends on what people have donated which means you might have to visit several stores to find a pair that fits and doesn't have holes in the soles.
Buffalo Exchange would be the most expensive and they would carry more 'trendy' sneaks than proper athletic footwear. They like hipster shoes and clothing.
Another place to try is Play It Again Sports. It's consignment, but they have good prices.
Salvation Army and Goodwill would be the best thrift stores to look in. Shoes are $3-$8 depending on the brand name and condition.

What am I like according to my birth chart?
Q. Sun: Libra
Aries
Moon

(that's the order it was according to my birth chart)
Ok fine.

18th october, 1994

Gorgan, iran

A. Sun
Libra
You are oh-so-elegant and tasteful to the point of incurring nausea from loved ones. You are also bipolar as hell and can't make a decision on your own. You usually consult your therapist or TV Guide. Libras are trendy and malleable folks. They are funny because they will glom onto something they hated before if it suddenly becomes fashionable. Velour is not entirely lost upon these people. Libras eat a lot of ethnic food from cultures they don't understand. They single-handedly started the cappucino movement. Ask them why, and they will claim something unintelligible about solidarity. You constantly worry about what other people think. If you really paid any attention, maybe people would like you more. Libras use quotes from David Mamet plays to describe philosophical concepts. Then they have those concepts engraved upon nice little wallet cards. The Libran interest in current events ends with the J. Crew catalog. They don't eat fast food or have any clue where their trash goes. They have other people tie their expensive shoes. Only two Libras have ever been found in thrift stores. All of their bell-bottoms were color-coordinated to match their lamé turtlenecks. Libras are always on the cutting edge of what the rest of us think is absolute pretentious bulls**t. They have huge collections of CDs they've never even listened to. Libras give to designer charities. Hollywood is full of Libras. You are the reason butterfly hairpins and parachute pants have made a comeback. Next on the list is those big jam shorts. You probably never threw out your old pair. Hang on to your Winger t-shirt too. Get a Libra as drunk as possible and he or she will still be able to explain the difference between café latté and café au lait. This is peculiar as the rest of us know that there is no difference at all.

Moon
Aries
Aries have ramlike eyebrows and smug expressions. They should not be quite so smug because they are constantly clunking themselves in the skull. Cat Stevens' "Hard Headed Woman" was probably an Aries. Aries rarely say one thing and do another. They usually do the wrong thing and don't discuss it. Never point this out to an Aries unless you want your kidneys pulled out through your sinuses. Aries folks love Pisceans because Pisces people make them feel well-grounded. Aries love to laugh at the funny moon-people who suck their thumbs at age 35. Aries use guns to describe philosophical concepts. Whether you live in a palatial estate or a cardboard tepee, you will insist until death that it is exactly what you always wanted. Most Aries were concrete parking bumpers in at least two of their past lives. Aries are never born. They skip gaily from their mothers' wombs. This may even involve rollerblades. The Aries makes life decisions as a toddler. Aries marry several times for funnies but never divorce. Their spouses have many freak accidents resulting in death or crippling injury. Being infallible, God is probably an Aries. This would make Satan an Aquarius. Aries always hold management positions. If one is assigned to clean toilets, he will form a one-man union. Then he will go and picket in the parking lot. All of you think you're Lech Walesa. People run away when an Aries comes around. They know that if they do not, the Aries will set them on fire. Aries hate listening to Scorpios talk because they take pride in being even more self-centered. In fact, much to the Scorpios' dismay, you are the biggest pricks in the zodiac. Your rams' horns are in everyone else's asses.

What are pretty but inexpensive brands of clothing for young adult women?

Q. I have so many old clothes that I want to donate which came from who knows where. Preferably a brand not as mainstream as Forever 21 and H&M, I know of those places. I live in California if that helps at all.

A. Have you ever tried the more "trendy" thrift stores? Sometimes you can find really good deals there. I live in California too. What's popular here is a store called Buffalo Exchange. I don't know what part of California you are in, but in So-cal there is one in Fullerton. And one in Long Beach. Up north, I only know of one in Berkeley. I know there is many more.
Here's their website: http://www.buffaloexchange.com/

There is also a store called La Bomba, but that is only in So-Cal I think.

They have really... vintagey Forever 21 looking, but better clothing. Sometimes they are pricey, but it depends on the item of clothing. Jackets are usually the most expensive things in the store. It is a thrift store though, so everything is gently used. Also, if you have old clothes to get rid of, you can take em to Buffalo Exchange. How it works there is a worker will look through your clothes and determine if they want to buy them from you. They are really picky about clothing, but they will buy your clothes if deemed "fashionable" enough for re-sale. It's a really hipstery place, though. They get a little cocky and will totally judge your style.

Also, have you tried Ross? Sometimes, their clothes are just ugly, but you can also find great cheap jeans there, sometimes cute shoes or tops as well.

How do you dress cute, but not girly?
Q. I work with a lot of older women, and I want to dress professional but not boring but not childish either because I want to be taken seriously
Like the girls on the Hills but not as expensive. They dress cute but not childish or slutish right?

A. 1] buy clothes that flatter your figure and coloring, not just 'hot' items
2] buy things that coordinate without being to matchy-matchy
[ like brown leather jacket with brown tweed top of knee skirt = cute and professional, but not girly or boring ]
3] trends in tops usually blend into office wear better than any 'funky' [ puddle pants, very high waists, skinny jeans, micro minis, hooker stilettos, sky high platforms ] bottoms or shoes. They are also cheaper, overall!
4] add some interesting belts to a 'boring' outfit - chain, lace, velvet, patent leather, woven, crocodile.
5] wear interesting shoes - different heel heights, colors, textures, [ velvet, quilted, etc. ]. No open toes, or sandals.
6] wear trendy costume jewelry [ not juvenile! ]. Avoid plastic beads, etc. Try various precious metals, and modern set stones for rings, earrings.
7] grown up hair - ponytail with a barette - yes, with a scrunchie or banana clip - no; pigtails - no.
french braid or single braid - yes, double braids - no
pulled back with barette or leather or fabric band - yes, plastic headband - no.

Where can i get a pair of denim bib overalls?
Q. I've been looking around for a decent pair for a while and havent had any luck. I'm a size 0-2.

A. Women's Fashion Overalls

Fashion overalls can be more than high-fashion.

Women's fashion overalls can be a little bit overwhelming for fashionable dressers. We sometimes wonder how we can pull off a look that's usually associated with farmers and laborers, but it takes a good eye to pick the right cut to match overalls with stylish heels and accessories. Don't push yourself to hunt out the most fashionable pair of overalls right off the bat, because a relaxed style can be dressed up gorgeously if you know what to do, and those might even replace your jeans if you buy the right pair. Why not test out women's fashion overalls and see why some women will never let them go again?

Why Overalls?

If you love a fashion challenge, overalls are a great pick. You can style them up in a variety of ways, pair them with a number of different top types underneath, and play around with hats, earrings, and shoes to make the look your own. What's even better is their hard-wearing appeal-they won't wear out, and you can wash them as many times as you need to without worrying about damage. Even better than that is their ability to be easily repaired, and their acceptability for many different age groups. Why not wear a pair of fashion overalls?

Buy Women's Fashion Overalls

This list of places to buy women's fashion overalls will help you pick pairs that flatter you best. Many of the stores listed carry certain styles of overalls, so after a few clicks, you'll find that you can identify a few stores that complement your personal style best. After you bookmark your favorites, consider whether or not you'd like to purchase classic or trendy pairs, and then shop away until you find your dream pair of fashionable overalls. Every daring woman should have a pair of overalls like these!

Lucky Brand carries edgy denim overalls in a few different cuts. You can find wide or baggy overalls if you like to wear something that allows your body to move more freely, or you can look for a pair of denim overalls in stretch, so you can wear them tighter to the body. To flatter most frames, purchase a pair of overalls in dark denim.

Shop at Ssense for overalls with a more modern silhouette. You can pull on hipster overalls that are similar to overall jumpsuits or rompers, and you'll be able to purchase ones with more stylized button plackets and pocket accents. Some of the overalls in the pull-on, button-on looks can be worn without a shirt underneath, and have a halter neck instead. If you plan to wear your overalls out at night, this could be the source for you.

Check out Yoox for more traditional style overalls from designer brands. You can get them in a medium wash and a semi-relaxed fit, which looks amazing with wedge heels, or you can also pick up those traditional shape overalls complete with rips and distressing for a "real" look.

Go to Shopbop for denim overalls with longer overall straps, similar to denim jeans with long suspender straps. While most flattering on women with smaller busts, you can experiment with these with the straps hanging down or taken off if you have a larger or fuller figure. Try these particular jean overalls with booties or strappy wedges for a dramatic effect, and don't forget those hoop earrings to complete the look!

Go to Free People for the ultimate in relaxed denim. If you crave comfort and you won't compromise, you'll love their moderately-priced, fashionable overalls in a variety of roomy cuts. Distressing is mandatory, so why not pair these with your favorite well-worn tee?

Shop at Frankie Morello for some of the most creative overalls and jumpsuits you'll see online. Not only can you find extremely fashionable styles, but you can grab them in a bunch of great new colors with a trend-conscious palette.

A. Your confidence is another one of your good qualities. The fact that you can acknowledge that you aren't "them" is admirable and you'll find someone that can appreciate you for who you are. Corny as it sounds, you seem like a good person, and there's never a shortage of people looking for that.

What to wear: Spring break trip to Long Beach, CA?
Q. I live in the Midwest and it's still pretty cold, doesn't feel like spring. I'm traveling to Long Beach, CA with a friend for Spring Break, March 13-19. What should I wear, any ideas? I'm a trendy person, but with the temperature differences, I can't wear the same clothes to CA.

Could I wear shoes like these?
http://www.myspringshoes.com/us/sale/women/sale-shoes/80456533-PATMAN/28
http://www.myspringshoes.com/us/sale/women/sale-boots/80311414-baysinger/96

What kind of clothes do you guys wear? I'm guessing most people are pretty trendy.

Thanks a lot!

A. Wearing hoodies here is just as popular as it is in the Midwest. I've got a family in the Midwest and there isn't the fashion gap there used to be. You can't go wrong with flip flops and Converse All Stars. Toms are a popular casual brand of shoe too. Sandals of all kinds are always popular. People actually still wear Uggs boots here, sometimes with shorts. It's an ugly look. Wearing very expensive jeans like 7 For All Mankind is still popular. American Apparel is also popular. Both are Los Angeles brands.
Don't bother bringing a bathing suit unless you're staying in a hotel with a heated pool or you just plan on laying out. The water will still be in the 50's. Our March temperatures are high 60's, low 70's during the day and in the upper 40's, low 50's at night.
Long Beach isn't a Spring Break destination. Our large shipping port makes the beaches and water undesirable and polluted. It's still pretty to look at and there is a nice paved bike path along the beach, just don't expect crowds. Huntington Beach is where you will find more people.

There are millions of people in the LA area and people dress every way imaginable. Most people are not trendy.

Thoughts about the woman pulled off the South West Airlines Flight?

Q. I'm curious to hear opinions of the young lady who was pulled off the SouthWest Airlines flight because her outfit was too revealing. The pictures of her, wearing her skirt and top were I thought not out of the norm, she was tall, blonde and a bit busty but nothing at all revearling about her top and her skirt was low to mid thigh. They actually showed some of the older SW Airline flight attendents from the 70's wearing hot pants on CNN today. Curious to hear opinions, because this woman was dressed nicely and I have seen some pretty poorly dressed people not get a second look. Think that jealously had anything to do with it?
I only saw the picture of her that was shown on the media. She looks fine in it and didn't have a tank top on, she had a top and sweater. My understanding was that it was a female passenger who complained after the boarded the plane and that she was given a blanket to cover herself after getting back on.

A. I offer 2 opinions on the topic of personal appearance in public places -

1. Airlines (Buses, Cruise ships, Railroads, etc) have the right to demand certain standards of conduct (or appearance)of passengers, and sometimes enforce that right when passengers or the airline would be harmed. In this case, however, I have heard that another passenger complained to the airline, and caused this situation to arise.
I have no idea what gives one passenger the right to judge the lady's clothing, this seems to be hypocritical and surely could have been resolved by moving the complaining passenger to a seat out of view of the young lady, and offering a blindfold to the complaining passenger.
Since the airline crew now had to intervene quickly, in order to let the flight take off on time, and keep the peace, perhaps it was easiest at the moment to do what SW did, right or wrong. On the other hand (with my perfect hindsight), if I were the air crew, I would have told BOTH passengers to get off and let them battle it out in court for being involved in a dispute of a nature unable to be resolved in a timely manner.

Opinion #2: On personal pride of appearance AND tolerance (or lack of tolerance), what ever happened to these things?
It used to be that far fewer people (slobs, etc) went out in public place dressed badly. I am not talking about dressing in a unique, trendy way, but plain out wearing ragged, dirty smelly clothing, etc. I once sat (in first class cabin, Dallas to London) way too close to a young couple and baby, dressed in worn-out jeans, tattered plain white-T shirts, cheap shower shoes, etc and the toddler wearing only a diaper and some kind of sleeping clothes, barely enough to keep it from catching cold. Granted that your clothing choices can be limited by your income and budget, but if you have the means to fly in first-class cabin to London, surely you could afford to dress better than that? On tolerance, YES, I thought to myself that if I had the power, I would tell that couple to dress more appropriately for the occasion, but of course I realized that I do NOT have that power, so I just kept my mouth shut, put on my headset, listened to the music, and enjoyed the flight.

Ok, open for debate, I would like to read your comments, anyone?

Where can I find cheap whole sale vendors in Chicago and online?
Q. Hello,
I am starting a new business and I am looking for whole sale vendors who have trendy women's clothing, shoes, assessories, and etc. I am opening my shop in Chicago and I do not have an idea as to where I am going to get the goods that I need for my store. If anyone has suggestions that can direct me to a place where I can buy goods at a resonable whole sale price would GREATLY appreciate your response.
Thank you so much for your time,
Jasmine

A. The Chicago Apparel Center is hosting a Women's and Children's show on June 6 to June 9. There is a list of vendors and their showrooms at www2.mmart.com. If you don't have a mart card yet, bring business cards, a letter on your letterhead describing your business, and business credit references to register for the show. Once you receive your mart card, you will be notified of all future shows. If you don't have credit references, you can prepay for orders with a business credit card.

Is there such thing as Trendy Orthopedic Athletic shoes?
Q. I'm a 34 year old woman who works in a business casual setting. Can anyone help with finding trendy orthopedic shoes? My Dr says I need to wear gym shoes while treating my planter faciitis but it seems difficult to accessorize around the New Balance shoes??? Puma is trendy but are they ok? I'm going to ask my Dr about them but thought I may get an answer here first. Help please?! Most styles are just too u-g-l-y!

A. Hi,

This question is the reason so many retailers of orthopedic shoes have trouble selling their products to consumers. The answer is quite simple -- yes! Nowadays, orthopedic shoe manufacturers have started bringing in shoe designers to update their shoes. In fact, they try to mirror the current styles of ordinary shoes as much as possible, while preserving the qualities and features that make them orthopedic.

If you are looking for a place to start your search for stylish orthopedic shoes, check out brands such as Orthaheel, Aetrex, Ecco, and Propet.

What is appropriate casual and "going out" clothing for a 26 year old female?

Q. Would you be able to give me some specifics, maybe a list of specifics that should be in the wardrobe? And should I be shopping in the woman's section or junior's section of a department store?

A. know how to mix and match. :) nothing wrong w/ junior's dept if it fits you! also, know what is appropriate for work wear, and the rest is up to you.

here what is in my wardrobe that i wear most of the time, and i am 26 too!

Jeans (shorter pair to wear w/ flats, one longer and fits better for heels/boots). Citizens have good jeans, i wear those everyday! but are $$$$... if u do'nt want to splurge u can go to ross, i got a pair of BCBG jeans for like $25.

White button up blouse: u can wear it w/ aNYTHING!

Wide Belt in black or brown. definitely makes any outfit a bit more stylish.

Nice jacket.. right now i have a really nice Cordoroy Dark Purple jacket from J.Crew (got it on sale for only $30! was $150 before~), i also have a $25 one from Target that is black and velvet.. very cute.

Nice Coat.. for night time and cold weather. u can wear this w/ jeans OR with dresses!

A handful of cute dresses.. either summer dresses, classic, or trendy. i have a cute Forever 21 dress (red w/ polka dots and puffed sleeves), a pretty classic type Ann Taylor Teal Blue dress w/ antique style buttons and black and beige trim... right now a cute look is a chiffon flowy dress w/ dark tights and a chunky knit sweater and belt!!!!

Jewelry: right now i like Long necklaces, and u can pair them up w/ different length necklaces and bracelets. Forever 21 has great ones for like $7.00, and some of them look really classy too if u pair them up w/ right clothes.

Shoes: at least one pair of flats, one pair of boots, and one pair of sneakers/comfy walking shoes, and as many cute Heels, Pumps, and Sandals as possible!

a great look is this: jeans, white blouse, wide belt at the skinniest part of the waist, cute jacket on top, and either boots or flats. u can also substitute a cardigan for the jacket and put the belt over (or under) as well. i'd also like to invest in a cute Pencil Skirt, u can tuck in the white blouse and put the belt over! sooo cute...

make sure ur hair and makeup always looks good, and no matter what u wear u will look trendy~ :)

there are plenty but, the basic guideline would be to go for shoe colours that are in the dress such as white or tan/beige/nude or pale yellow or pale green. in this case, avoid black as it would look a tad bit awkward with this dress.

Question for women with wide feet?

Q. I have wide feet (like a duck, much wider across the toes than at the heel) and thick ankles. Can someone give me the name of a fashionable store (other than Naturalizer, shop there a lot) that I can get a nice, "non-grandma", pair of shoes. I need some more variety.

A. I have Fred Flinstone feet, as a friend so delicately puts it, and I usually have pretty good luck at PayLess Shoes. They have trendy shoes in larger sizes, as well as in wide width. Also, if you don't mind internet shopping, try the following for a decent selection of shoes:

4EE shoes for women?
Q. My poor mum who's only 56 is housebound but she's always been quite stylish, the last few years her feet have been swollen so she's had to wear "old lady shoe's" as she calls them, i want to get her a lovely pair of 1 & a half inch heeled shoes. i have no idea where to find a trendy pair of 4EE shoes in london. After my search, to me, if you have wide feet you're classed as needing soft slippers!! Help!!

A. i'm not sure if they do them that small but evans do wide fitting shoes, i know because i take a 9EE/10 and they are about the only place i can buy them from. Brantano's is also good for strange sized shoes, i know they go down into small sized shoes but im not sure weather they do wide fittings there.

Those are the only places i can think of off the top of my head, hope they help!

What should a 12 year old boy wear to a wedding?
Q. My little brother wants to wear black dress slacks, a white/cream "silk" collared polo, and white Jordan basketball shoes to a "formal" wedding. I think he should change shoes, but he insists just because they are new. The wedding is THIS Saturday, August the 18th...please help me convince him that he is too casual for the wedding!

Here's the wedding website along with the cathedral and reception sites...:

http://benandceleste.com/index.html

http://www.blessedsaccathedral.org/

http://www.librarygalleria.com/

Thanks soo much!

A. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At a formal wedding, he should wear a dark suit, tie and dress shoes.

Wedding Style for him

* Informal Daytime: Dress shirt and pants, preferably a sports jacket.
* Informal Evening: Suit
* Semi-Formal Daytime: Suit
* Semi-Formal Evening: Dark suit
* Formal Daytime: Dark suit and tie
* Formal Evening: Tuxedo (if invitation states "black tie") or dark suits if women wear short dresses.
* Ultra-formal Evening or White Tie: White tie, cummerbund, vest and shirt.

Do's and Don'ts for Him

* Don't try to get cute with a tuxedo. A black tux with white shirt and black bow tie is the best way to go. If "Creative Black Tie" or "Texas Formal" or some sort of other vague formal description is used, then going with a tux and black shirt, no tie, might be acceptable. Also, trendier cities like Los Angeles and New York might be more accepting of breaking with tradition.
* Do wear a dark suit, with a tie if the wedding is after 6 PM, and doesn't say "Black Tie."
* Don't wear a tuxedo during the day time, regardless of the formality of the event.
* Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn't specify the formality of the event. A dark suit and conservative tie will take you just about anywhere.

What are trending back to school fashions for teen girls?

Q. Im in middle school and I was wondering what to pick out this year for my new outfits. Thanks for any help!
*I'm on a budget, so nothing too expensive please.

A. Hey! (:

--BOHO is very in. Think feather earrings, feather extensions, brown leather/pleather belts, colorful geometric-pattern skirts, gauzy blouses, etc.

--LACE is in...on shirts, bangles, accessories, and hair thingies.

--Fringe is in
--Cropped pants
--Sandals
--Rompers
--Anything off-the-shoulder (if you're allowed at your school)
--High waisted shorts
--Leather...on bags, belts, jackets, etc.
--Big, boho scarves. Especially with crazy patterns...think Pucci
--Distressed jeans
--Flare jeans are REALLY REALLY REALLY in right now!
--Ankle booties!
--Any oxford-style shoes
--Flowy blouses or the cute floral blouses
--Maxi dresses and skirts are really in, but I'm not sure anyone our age wears them?
--Oversized sweaters with skinny jeans or leggings and booties or boots

For stores, try:
--Forever 21 for skirts, blouses, party dresses, and cheap accessories...also, this store gives you a good idea of what's "in" right now
--Kohl's/Walmart/Target for basics
--Payless for cheap ballet flats and other trendy shoes
--Abercrombie and Fitch or Hollister for preppy classics. Try looking at the online sales! The stuff can be knocked down by 30 or 40 dollars!
--H&M has the whole boho style
--Nordstrom is amazing...great quality! It's a little more expensive, though.
--Try a basic drugstore for makeup...cheap and easy.
--American Eagle has the best jeans. They also have cute boho stuff.
--PacSun has awesome jeans, and vintagey cool clothes and accessories.

Good luck! (:

How to mod podge toms shoes with glitter?
Q. What r the steps ? I have the satin mod podge.

A. This tutorial could easily be adapted to Toms. See source for lots of photos.

TWINKLE TOES

It's time for me to happily admit something....I was the girl in Jr. high & high school who wore glitter on my eyelids and would also dab some on my face for game day....oh yea, that was me, and those were the days! I have such a thing for glitter! So you can imagine how excited I have been as glitter shoes have been making their way into the fashion world. I have been looking for the perfect pair that I must take home to join my other shoes, but I have been a little disappointed with the prices.

With $80 being the cheapest, I still wasn't comfortable spending that much "on a trendy shoe" which might not even get worn that often. I stylistically love all of the $200-$300 pairs....of course...so I decided to make my own. I must say I went into it with low expectations because I wasn't sure if I could get the look I wanted (meaning not too homemade looking) as well as still functional. My biggest challenge was that I had to find a way to keep the glitter on while walking. The last thing I wanted was to walk down the street leaving a little fairy dust trail behind me, even though it would have been pretty ;.) However, even though this was a four day process (including curing time) I must say I have never been SO PLEASED with a homemade shoe project ;.) okay, okay, this way my first one...but it really did turn out well. Here are the shoes finished...

The best part was that I was able to get the style shoe & color I wanted. Here is how I did it...

Before getting started: Invest in some nice glitter & glue. (remember to use coupons because the glues can be pricey and I learned not to skimp on them). I used Recollections brand glitter in Champagne (but you can use any color) as well as Mod Podge sparkle glue and a matte finish sealer.

Also find a pair of old or new shoes you would like to use. I purchased some new black leather shoes from Target.

Step 1: I used clear packaging tape to seal off the soul from the rest of the boot & then I gave it a light coat of gold spray paint because I did not want the black to peek through the gold tinted glitter. Here is what it looked like after.

Step 2: A little bit of paint seeped through the tape and onto the top edge of the shoe. So I used a gold metallic paint pen to draw around the top edge to make it look even....like this

Step 3: Now here comes the fun part. I used a sponge brush to apply a coat of Mod Podge glue to the tip of the shoe to start out with, and then lightly covered it with the glitter. Tip: I found it helpful to use the lid to a shoe box to glitter over, in order to catch the extra glitter.

After I finished the front tip I just kept working my way up the shoe. However, I left the little dot & stitching un-glittered because I liked the style of that detail.

I also chose not to cover the back because that was my preference

Step 4: I then left the shoes to dry over night. The next day I shook off the excess. You can be creative ;.) I stomped around in them in the back yard as well as used a blow up mattress compressor to blow the excess off ;.) Surprisingly the glue was super strong and held most of the glitter.

Step 5: The last step is to spray the finishing sealer on them (read directions on the can) and let them cure for a few days. Then add which ever laces you would like. You can use the original laces or have fun with them with ribbon.....I tried this fun pink ribbon lace first but then chose to go with the more natural tan colored ribbon when all was said and done.

And BAM! You have custom glitter shoes, which for someone like me is too fun for words. I am now just a little worried I might find myself looking at them when I walk....yikes, that's an accident waiting to happen! The best part is the project cost me $45 and I got the look I wanted. Now, I am trying to figure out what color of glitter shoes I want to make next ;.) Maybe some orange ballet flats for Halloween....ahhh endless possibilities.

why do shoe makers put such big heels on running shoes?

Q. no one runs landing on their heels. don't they know this? while i agree with some of the idea of those knew trendy barefoot glove shoes, i don't imagine ever seeing old people wearing something with such a small amount of padding....and we're all going to get old....i'd like to take precaution to how much impact my feet take.

A. You're better off running barefoot. Your feet take *less* impact if you run barefoot because you don't land on your heels when you run barefoot. Forget the "trendy barefoot glove shoes", though. They're a waste of $$$. Just go barefoot.

Tips for building our home and furnishing?
Q. Hi guys,
We are first time owner/builders and I am wanting some tips that the builders/architects and anyone that is making a profit won't tell you.
Just basic tips on getting good deals with things like furnishings and anything in general really.

We aren't after the cheapest thing in the shed but if we can some how find the essentials that are still top quality at a cheaper price than that is fab.

Hope I am making sense.

Many thanks.

A. Think you need to spend a lot of money or hire a decorator to have a home that looks like a photo in a decorating magazine? Think again. You can have a great-looking home on a budget, and decorating your rooms yourself rather than contracting with a professional not only saves money but also ensures that your "signature" will be on those rooms. These 10 simple rules will get you started.

1. Break the rules. You can mix plaids, florals, and stripes, but do it carefully. Choose a pleasing color scheme-for example, red, khaki, and sage green-and make sure that everything you choose for the room falls within that scheme. The colors will provide a unifying theme without making your room look like you picked an entire suite of furniture and accessories from one page in a catalog. Things don't need to match; they just need to complement each other.

2. Spend your money where it counts. A good couch will last years longer than a cheap one, so if you're going to sit on it every day, spend some money on it. Choose a neutral color and a classic style so that it has some staying power and accessorize with trendy items in bolder colors that you can change out when they start to look dated or you get tired of them.

3. Fill in with bargains. End tables from thrift shops or unpainted furniture stores are fairly inexpensive, and their look can easily be updated or tailored to your taste with inexpensive paint or stain.

4. Repurpose used items. I bought a large cedar chest at a thrift store for $50 to use as a coffee table. It's great for a small space-at various times, I've used it to store Christmas decorations, sewing supplies, and extra bedding for guests. It was badly scratched when I bought it, but I used brown paste shoe polish to fill in the scratches, and it looks great. Look for used items that are cosmetically damaged but structurally sound.

5. Consider "knockdown" furniture if you're the least bit handy and can operate a screwdriver. We found a wonderful table for one-third of its original price at an end-of-season sale that was perfect for our eat-in kitchen, but it didn't come with chairs. We found some chairs that complemented the table perfectly at an online retailer for $119 for a pair. It took my husband an hour to put together four of them. They look great and are very sturdy. The same chairs would have cost two or three times that much at a furniture store.

6. Visit thrift stores for unexpected finds. These places are a great source for baskets, vases, frames, curtains, books, and other accessories. Placing a basket of books next to the couch and a throw across the arm of an overstuffed chair will make a room look lived-in and comfortable rather than sterile.

7. Accessorize to create the look you want. Our plain red slip-covered couch became instantly cozy when we put striped throw pillows in the corners and a plaid flannel quilt over the back.
8. Go for the layered look on your bed. Resist the urge to buy a "bed in a bag" and create your own unique collection of linens. Mix and match striped, solid, plaid, and floral sheets and top them with a solid color comforter. Add lots of pillows and finish off the look with a blanket or throw folded and draped across the foot of the bed. If your bed is beautiful, you can get by with inexpensive lamps and bedside tables.

9. Avoid boring. Paint is relatively inexpensive and can bring a room to life. Even real estate specialists, who love the word "neutral," are now promoting the "new neutrals"-for example, gray, mocha, pale yellow, sage green, etc. These colors give a room personality, and paint color is one of the easiest things to change if you want a new look or decide to sell. Off-white is safe but not very interesting unless it's a backdrop for lots of bold furniture, rugs, and artwork.

10. Above all, make sure everything you keep or buy works toward creating the look that you're trying to achieve, whether it's a shabby chic cottage or a contemporary urban loft. Even "eclectic" is a look, and eclectic doesn't mean hodge-podge.

Why is the tattoo'd unkempt prison look so trendy?

Q. If current fashion were a class war, it's pretty apparent who is winning... Why is this? Lately, I see so many classy, attractive women with guys that look like they couldn't find their way out of a cardboard box... It's disturbing. It seems very primal - painfully barbaric... What happened to appreciating guys that dare to dream - guys that want to do something with their lives - guys that are educated, etc... You could say that I'm rushing to conclusions by judging people on outside appearances - but the way you choose to dress and act says a lot about who you are... I can't think of a single person who had a tattoo when I was in high school - now it seems like everyone has at least one...
It's not just tattoos - it's the whole baggy pants, spiked this and that, tattoo'd that, etc. It's a bit overwhelming after a while...

A. I understand and sympathize with your frustration. Be patient; smart women know the value of a man with class, intelligence, and ambition, and by their early twenties, when women start looking around for a man to be their life partner and father their children, they're usually really not interested in the "bad boy" look.

However, to answer the bigger question, the elite have always turned to the underclass for fashion guidance. In ancient Rome, the Empress Messalina thought it was amusing to dress up like a prostitute. (By law, prostitutes had to wear blonde wigs; it was a way of forcing them to identify themselves as not respectable.)

The super-wealthy of France in the time of Queen Marie Antoinette thought it was clever to dress like poor peasant women (in very fancy versions of peasant clothing) and go off and have picnics in the fields.

In the U.S., fashion in music, slang, and clothing has always taken inspiration from the underclass (the "criminal" class, the very poor, or oppressed racial & ethnic minorities) because the fashions of these groups have always been seen as "edgy" -- novel, new, exciting, different. For instance, black jazz was popularized by whites who felt they were being very daring by visiting black clubs.

All this edginess, newness, and daring-ness eventually adds up to being fashionable or even glamorous. The same thing happened when Elvis dared to adopt black performance style in his singing (in his dancing and some of his phrasing).

The "bad boy" look has always been exciting, and the movies (see James Dean or Marlon Brando) and later, TV, really promoted this. American culture loves the idea of the wild guy, the loner, the rule-breaker (see any Bruce Willis movie).

So, today's gangsta fashions are just an extension of that. Once, just wearing jeans meant you were a "bad boy," an admirabe rebel (or it meant you were dirt-poor and couldn't afford anything else). Now, people mimic the prison look: clothes which don't fit, shoes with the laces missing.

Tattoos are another story. There are a million reasons for people to get tattoos: to bond during military service or sports, for religious or cultural reasons, and so on. However, the fashion of covering yourself with tattoos in OUR time seems to me to be based on a couple of trends:
-- looking like you're jailin' -- that is, that you're such a bad bad boy you've been to prison
-- in women, rebelling a little against old standards of beauty. Supermodels, who have NO independence about how they dare to look, started the trend by getting ankle tattoos about fifteen or twenty years ago. Women from economic classes that traditionally did not get tattoos took this as permission, and got tattoos to show that they have a wild side
-- a strong rejection of mainstream values by Generation X and the generation since them; a way of rebelling against the mainstream Republican-and-Religion conservative style being enforced by the elite from about 1985 on up to the present.
-- peer pressure

You said, "the way you choose to dress and act says a lot about who you are... " -- yes, you're right, but sometimes, all it says is, "I haven't grown up yet and I'm desperate to look like all the cool kids my age and NOT look like my parents."

It might get you punched out, but aren't you ever tempted to say to one of these mismatched couples, "Hey, guy, she looks like a million bucks and you look like last week's laundry. Couldn't you dress up for her just a little? You look like her lawn man, not her date." Woo-hoo!! :)

Does this extract sound good?
Q. CeCe woke up as excited as can be. It was her fourteenth birthday. She could hardly breathe.
CeCe, are you up? her mother called from down stairs. Yeah, Im up! she called back to her, sitting up in her bed. Then her older sister, Bella, walks in, Happy Birthday little sister. She gave her a hug.
Thanks big sister. CeCe smiles as her sister walks down stairs. She made her way to her wardrobe and picked out the trendiest outfit she could find. It was a white sleeveless shirt, a green floral printed skirt and orchard pink patent lace up derby shoes with jewelled heels.
Then she went into the bathroom where, she washed her face and curled her layered brown hair. Quickly, CeCe put on a dab of lip balm and when downstairs for breakfast. Happy birthday, darling. Her mum said, in a perky voice. She hugs CeCe and kisses her on the forehead.
Happy birthday, CeCe. Her dad grinned, kissing her on the cheek. Then the doorbell rang. Ill get it! CeCe called rushing to the door. When she opened it, there was a tall redhead lady in a suit on the doorstep. CeCe was a bit worried so she shouted, Mum!
Her mother came to the door as the woman said Hello, Im Samantha Rhodes, London child and family service, I realize today is Miss Cecelias fourteenth birthday.
Yes, it is. CeCe mum replied, with a worried expression on her face.
Well, I suggest you dont know the truth, the lady said briefly May I come in? CeCe wondered what she could mean as she and her mum moved out of the way to let the lady in. Then she sits on the sofa followed by CeCe, her mum, her dad and Bella.
So Miss Cecelia, first off, happy birthday. The lady said, cheerily. Thanks. CeCe snapped, which sounded kind of mean. This is never easy, the lady continues, taking a deep breath But we are supposed to do this on the fourteen birthday of all of our children. Miss Cecelia Delilah Burrows, you are an adopted child.
CeCes mouth drops open, and she starts blinking really fast to hold back her tears Theres no way Im adopted. Go away and leave us alone!
Miss Burrows, I know youre upset, but you need to know the truth. The lady said, trying to reassure CeCe.
Its not the truth, youre lying! CeCe shouted.
You also have a twin, the lady continued, as CeCe started to calm down You were separated at birth. Her name is Alexandra Emma Pope. She lives in Hounslow. CeCe was left speechless, she ran up stairs to her room, and slammed the door shut.

A. It's not horrible, but based off this excerpt I wouldn't read this sort of novel. It's seems a bit too cliched.
